Leaning Tower of Pisa

One of the most remarkable architectural structures is located in one of the most visited European cities, Pisa. It was designed to be perfectly vertical, but it started to lean during construction. Tower of Pisa is around 57 meters (190 feet) tall. Until 1990 it was leaning at about astonishing 10 degree angle because of soft ground underneath which is inadequate to support the tower's structure and weight. Prior to restoration work between 1990 and 2001, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. Today tower leans at about 3.99 degrees because the top of the tower is displaced horizontally 3.9 meters (12 ft 10 in) from the center. The construction began in 1173 and continued for about 200 years due to the onset of a series of wars. Till today, the name of the architect is a mystery. With 207 columns ranged around eight stories including the chamber for the bells, Tower of Pisa looks like a massive wedding cake. Due to consolidation work tourists were not allowed to climb the staircase inside the tower, but now the leaning Tower of Pisa is open again and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.
