Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu located at at 2,430 m (8,000 ft), high in the Andes of Peru is the site of an ancient Inca city, often called The Lost City of the Incas. One of the most spectacular famous sets of ruins in the world representing symbols of Inca Empire and civilization. In 1981 Machu Picchu was declared as Peruvian Historic Sanctuary and in 1983 as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Most archaeologists believe that the Incas built the estate for Inca emperor Pachacuti around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest.
It was known locally, but it was not known and it remained unknown to the outside world until 1911 when American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention.

Machu Picchu, built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls, reconstructed in order to present its original look. Its three primary structures are the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana and the Room of the Three Windows.

The story of Machu Picchu is a remarkable one, still unknown exactly what the site was in terms of its place in Inca life. Although city was discover over 100 years ago, archaeologists are still trying to solve that mistery. Current researchers believe that Machu Picchu was a country resort for elite Incas and that there were no more than 750 people living at Machu Picchu, and much more during rainy season which is pretty heavy.
