Capital and largest city of Greece, Athens is one of the world's oldest cities,
with history of over 3,400 years and its earliest
human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium
BC. Athens is popular global city and one of the biggest economic centres in southeastern Europe.
One of the icons of Athens is the Acropolis with monuments which are universal symbols of the
classical spirit and civilization. They form the greatest architectural
and artistic complex.
Some of incredible monuments are: the
Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the
monumental entrance to the Acropolis and the
small temple Athena Nike.
Here we are presenting you 2 destinations among many more you can visit in Athens:
Parthenon
Located in Athenian Acropolis, Parthenon is a former temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom was considered patron by people of Athens. The Parthenon is a temple of the Doric order with ration of 9:4, eight columns
at the facade, and seventeen columns at the flanks. In 1975, the Greek government began to restore the
Parthenon including other Acropolis structures.
Temple of Olympian Zeus
The Temple of Olympian Zeus, was built over several centuries starting in 174 BCE and only finally completed by Roman emperor Hadrian in 131 CE. The temple is one of the largest ever built in the ancient world with unusually tall columns. This monument of Greece and a former colossal temple at the centre of the Greek capital Athens was dedicated to Olympian Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian gods. Construction of the greatest temple in ancient world began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants, but it was not completed until the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, some 638 years later. The temple had 104 columns of 17 m high each and 2 m in diameter each. Unfortunately, this temple was damaged through history and now contains only 15 columns and a sixteenth column is lying on the ground.
